St. Teresa of Child Jesus Delegation, Italy

Heeding the call of Jesus to “go into all the world and preach the Gospel to all creation” (Mark 16:15), the MSMHC made its first step to move out of India in 1989 by opening its first centre in Italy. The arrival of Sr. Pushpa George, Sr. Eligina Beck and Sr. Celine Phawa, accompanied by Sr. Elizabeth Packumala, the then Mother General of the MSMHC on 8 September 1989 at Borgomasino, diocese of Ivrea marks the beginning of the Congregation’s mission in the continent of Europe.

The pioneers began their journey cheerfully, offering their service to the old people at the institute of Opera Pia Divina Provvidenza, at Borgomasino. The Lord was pleased with their gentle and resolute way of carrying out the mission that the Congregation received opportunities to expand its mission to various parts of Italy. In 2002 the centres in Italy were brought together under a Delegation for better administration. Sr. Pushpa George was appointed the first Delegation Superior with Sr. Veronica Maiong, Sr. Mary Panamthanath and Sr. Marta Do Rosario as her councillors.

At present, the Italian Delegation has 14 communities with 43 members working in the dioceses of Turin, Genova, Acqui Terme, Milan, Brescia, Rome and Kolen (Germany). Besides caring for the aged, its members are engaged in pastoral service which include, liturgical animation, catechesis for children, youngsters and adults, youth ministry, counselling, retreat, seminar and family apostolate.
